It’s that time of year again when the fog rolls in and we all start craving all things warm and comforting. And it is agreeable that instant ramen bowls get old, very fast. Most of us are definitely looking for a healthier option that is reasonable. That’s why shabu shabu or hot pot, is my go to! It’s healthy, filling and a little fun. Lucky for us, San Francisco has numerous shabu shabu restaurants to choose from. Most of you can find one right in your very own neighborhood. I found one just down the street from my apartment that always hits the spot. G Cube Cafe off of Taraval Street and 27th Street serves up some awesome portions for just around fifteen bucks!
Honestly I didn’t have very high expectations for G Cube since there are tons of “alright” shabu shabu places, but this place DELIVERS. The ingredients they use are always fresh and you can taste the quality. The cuts of beef, lamb and pork are all of the best they can find. G Cube also creates an experience that is unique to each customer because of the choices that allows you to create your own menu. You start by choosing from three broths to cook your choice of meat and vegetables in. The options include; clear broth, miso broth and a spicy miso broth. Then you decide if you’d like thinly sliced beef, lamb or Kurobuta pork. Alongside the generous amounts of meat, your meal comes with tons of fresh vegetables, dumplings and noodles as well. If you decide to do the set dinner you get all that, a bowl of rice and a scoop of ice cream for dessert. All for only $15! It’s a deal you can’t miss.

Me and my girlfriends decided to try the spicy miso broth and each ordered our own meat. I went with the thinly sliced beef. First of all their spicy miso broth hit the spot! It’s rich but not overly flavorful. It complemented the fresh vegetables and beef perfectly. The tofu and dumplings were also very tasty! I imagine all these things would taste great in their other broths which I’m dying to try next time. Along with the broth you are provided with two choices of dipping sauces: a nutty miso dressing and ponzu sauce (a citrus based soy sauce). I recommend trying your meat and vegetables with these. After our meal we were greeted with our scoops of ice cream! You can choose from traditional asian ice cream flavors. They include green tea, red bean and sesame. I had the green tea which was great.

G Cube Cafe is a great place to try something new. They serve simple ingredients that make great comfort food. It is also a good place for vegetarians! They’ve also got a vegetarian set menu with an awesome assortment of vegetables and tofu. And if you and your friends are really hungry they have an all you can eat menu for $28! You can order all the meat and vegetables you want. However, the set menu is quite a lot of food so I recommend starting with that. It gets even better if you like sake and beer! They also have an all you can eat and drink menu for $38 a person. Under $40? Not bad! G Cube Cafe is great for the family or a night out with girls. You can have an early or late dinner, they are open until 10:30 pm.
