Lea Michele’s Orange & Grey Dress at The Paris Fall 2012 Versace Show

I have a confession to make. I’m currently having a serious summer fling with colorblocking. I’ve traded in my boring blacks in favor of mixing bright oranges, pinks, blues and more – It’s like I’ve given my wardrobe anti-depressants and the excitement and possibilities are endless! But come Fall I fear that I will once again turn back to the dark side, where mixing orange and hot pink is a thing only seen on South Beach. But, today I have found hope in the oddest place…

While I’m not much of a Gleek, star Lea Michele made me sing my own little song by pairing bright and neutral in this fabulous little sheath dress and grey platform, and it’s great inspiration on how colorblock will work in late summer and fall. Take your bright, bold colors and mix in a neutral like grey or tan to cool down the look a bit. Also, instead of wearing light chiffon fabrics, try a thicker fabric with more straight lines, like Lea’s sheath. Mixing in cool metallics, animal print and suede shoes will round out the look.

What is the grander lesson in all of this, you ask (okay, well maybe you didn’t ask)? Good singing cannot be taught, but fashion sense can be.

Psyched for Stripes

The horizontal Breton stripe has been popular on the street for a few years now. I wasn’t truly in love with the idea until I saw Ewan McGregor sport a variety of striped sweaters in “Beginners”  The Breton stripe, once a uniform for the French navy in Brittany, now inhabits my wardrobe in many forms. It is an easy basic to wear, and I like the classic navy and white stripe the best. To mix it up past its “Paris and preppies” routine, I have been pairing my striped tops with other prints in the same color family, wearing them with long boho skirts, or trying to find interesting Breton variations. The recent Altuzarra collection for J.Crew has a few not-your-usual-Breton variations, and I think the Patricia Dress is a great example, just waiting to be dressed up or down with accessories:

The deconstructed and bleached out stripe on the Allsaints Horizon top recalls the Breton stripe:

I like the shawl collar on this top from Banana Republic:

This Zadig and Voltaire T shirt has the bohemian Breton down:

A striped short for the beach is unexpected. I’d love to pair this with a bolder pattern or bright solid top:

Lastly, this Red Haute number is ready to party:

Double Take: Cameron Diaz Chic in White at Paris Fashion Week 2012

I hate to say it, but I’ve been underwhelmed by the 2012 “Awards Season” fashion thus far. Angelina Jolie in a black gown. Sophia Vergara in a curve hugging mermaid dress. Zooey Deschanel looking quirky and cute. I love all of these gorgeous ladies, but the redundancy of it all forced me to jump all the way across the pond for this week’s celebrity style to steal – In fact I almost jumped in. But luckily my fashion sense landed in the middle of Paris, where fashion was happening all around the city and Cameron Diaz was proving that white in the winter is the new black with two different to-die-for white dresses.

The key? Pair the looks with a black or nude shoe like Cameron did and take it easy on the accessories to let the detail in the dress do the talking. For a modern take on lace pair it with minimal makeup and undone hair. You’ll look sweet and fresh and not like a Stepford Wife. Pair the peplum with a but more makeup and sleek hair a little to look chic and sophisticated. That’s what I call white done right.

Designing at 16

Fashion shows and runways are not exclusive to the streets of New York, Paris and Milan. As a matter of fact, here in the Bay Area a Fashion Show took place at a local High School and I had the privilege of covering it. At Monta Vista High School there is a fashion club which consists of aspiring fashion designers who have made their passion a reality.

This was their 6th annual fashion show and it consisted of multiple designers — not only limited to those in the fashion club. The gym at Monta Vista was transformed into a vision of a runway show and music that drew me into the excitement of what was to come.

The show began when the MC introduced the members of the fashion club and their vision behind the show that night.

The lights grew dim and the show began with an introduction of each designer and the story behind their respective line. There was a fresh, catchy vibe to each line, with some looks consisting of recycled fabrics from goodwill, silk, velvet and other favored fabrics of the designers as well as a dress made out of a garbage bag.

“Our officers, including myself are the girls who put on the entire show together, and might I remind you that all of us are only 16. If we managed this now, imagine the next generation of the fashion Industry with us? I learned a lot from the show. Most importantly, procrastination is not your friend. It was so nice to have so many family and friend there supporting us, it honestly meant the world. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll see me in New York’s fashion week!” -Sherry Roohi (second to the left in featured image)

The most intriguing facet of the whole show was the story behind each designers line. Some themes involved the beach, dresses, toy guns, and re-purposed fabrics. The MC had a way of capturing the attention of the audience by describing each line before the crowd saw the pieces.

I was blown away by the talent of each designer and the time spent to create such wearable and inspiring pieces. The models carried themselves with so much poise and exuberance, adding a certain mystique to an already entertaining show that drew in each audience member.

The designers and models also had a crew of family and friends who supported them scattered throughout the audience, which showered them with applause each time they took the stage.  The designers each had their own unique aura and their youth and passion was inspiring  to all those around them.

Not only was the show was full of fun and fresh talent, but it was evident that these girls possessed a determination that will take them to great places as they begin their journey  into the fashion industry.
