How to Guide: Professional Attire

Professional clothing is a difficult task to tackle for women. For a man, it’s pretty simple–you wear a suit. But for a woman, it is not that easy. It is difficult to find items that look both attractive and stylish, while being affordable and appropriate. I have seen some pretty bad things in my days working in an office. Whether it be saggy slacks, running shoes, or a frumpy suit, I’ve seen it all. I’ve even seen the occasional Guess boustier on “casual” Friday.

Here are some tips that will help you to create a closet to fit the working woman:

First, find slacks that fit you. Slacks should be straight, not tapered. Please avoid pleats at all costs. Your slacks should fit you at the waist, and should not go above your waist line (unless you’re going for that high-wasted, shirt tucked in, look). A great place to find good slacks in Banana Republic. With excellent quality, and a wide selection in cuts and sizes, you will be sure to find a pair a slacks in any color built to last for years. For a cheaper alternative, H&M has great options for slacks as well.

Second, get tops that flatter your figure. When it comes to women’s “men’s” shirts, you need them to be darted, fitted, and have feminine details. Avoid anything that is boxy and pulls on your breasts. Actually avoid pulling and gaping all together when it comes to buttons. For a more feminine touch, add pieces of jewelry to complete your look. Foxcroft, a brand sold at Nordstrom, designs beautiful fitted tops that are both feminine and professional.

Third, invest in a woman’s suit. This can often times be an expensive piece to your wardrobe, but an important one. If you’re looking for the best, a suit from Giorgio Armani or St. John, is one that is both timeless and long lasting. For a more affordable alternative, Anne Klein or Tahari create excellent women’s suits. Just make sure you stay away from anything that doesn’t dart, and makes you look boxy.

Fourth, purchase shoes that are comfortable and fashionable. For this, you should definitely look into Donald J. Pliner, Stuart Weitzman, or Jimmy Choo’s 24:7 line. For a budget conscience choice, try Steve Madden, Sam Edelman, or BCBG. Personally, I like wearing that extra high-heel, but find it difficult when I am on my feet for hours. A friend suggested the Zahara from Bebe, and I fell in love! These shoes are hot and available in every color! I highly suggest looking into these gorgeous, comfortable heels.

A struggle that I have always had is finding blouses that work with pencil skirts. J Crew, H&M, and Club Monaco sell some great tops that tuck easily into skirts without looking awkward. For a fabulous pencil skirt, I recommend looking into Armani Exchange and Guess’ Marciano line.

For various separates, I highly recommend looking into The Limited and Michael Kors. To find designer professional wear at a discount price, a trip to Nordstrom Rack is well worth your time. My personal favorite stop for professional wear, and my most favorite brand is Kenneth Cole, and honestly, I cannot rave enough about it. The brand has a great selection of professional clothing that is classy with a little extra edge. You can easily go from the workplace to a night on the town.

If you take the tips that I have provided, and add your own personal twist, you are sure to create the perfect professional wardrobe that will make you stand out in the best of ways. There is no need to put fashion aside in the working world. You can be beautiful, classy, and exceptionally stylish, all while moving up the corporate ladder.

Don’t Forget to Take a Picture

Ever in the store and spot something you absolutely love and wish someone was there to share the joy? Now there is a great way to share, with other fashion enthusiasts, a photo of those Tory Burch boots you have been obsessing over or the Prada messenger back that almost had you fainting.  Check out the recently launched Snapette.com iPhone app and never feel like you are shopping alone.

This app works similarly to Instagram. For example, a group of your friends are out shopping and one of them spots a pair of Jeffrey Campbell booties they absolutely adore. They snap a picture of their fashion find and upload the photo to Snapette.com, which will feature the picture in the order it was received. By uploading the photo, detailing the brand, location and price, she has now made the Jeffrey Campbell shoes easy to find for other Snapette.com users. This is a great way to share with others your fashion finds you discover when out shopping.

Another feature of this app that I really enjoyed was clicking on the photos and finding out what cities the other users were uploading from. For instance, there are pictures of a Hermes side bag uploaded from Ginza, Japan and grey Jimmy Choo pumps found at a Nordstrom’s in Arlington, VA.  To take finding products a step further, you can find the brand, location, price and even get directions to the store if you select on the shoe or bag. Like most social apps, you can follow users as well. In addition you can click “love” if you like a photo and make comments. Lastly, you can also share other user posts on your Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter.

The one downside about the app is that you can only upload photos of shoes and bags. Meaning no dresses, jewelry, makeup or scarfs. Since the company was only founded in January of 2011, I have a feeling this is something that will change in the coming future or at least, can only hope so. Otherwise, I think this is another great innovative app zooming in on fashion and creating an online social environment for fashionistas.

Don’t hesitate to download the iPhone app from the iTunes store and start sharing pictures of your favorite shoes and bags while you are shopping!

Lanvin to Design Exclusive Collection for H&M

H&M Hennes & Mauritz AB is proud to announce that it will be collaborating with Lanvin, to create a line set to release for Autumn of this year. Over the years, H&M has teamed up with several others, such as Madonna, Karl Lagerfeld, Jimmy Choo, and Comme des Garcons. The highly anticipated Lanvin for H&M collection is set to debut November 2, but will not be available for purchase till November 23. Of around 2000 H&M stores worldwide, only 200 will be carrying the Lanvin collection come November.

“H&M approached us to collaborate, and see if we could translate the dream we created at Lanvin to a wider audience, not just a dress for less. I have said in the past that I would never do a mass-market collection, but what intrigued me was the idea of H&M going luxury rather than Lanvin going public. This has been an exceptional exercise, where two companies at opposite poles can work together because we share the same philosophy of bringing joy and beauty to men and women around the world.” Alber Elbaz, artistic director of Lanvin.

“We are thrilled about Lanvin’s collection for H&M, it is such an exciting moment. Lanvin will bring to H&M a luxurious French tradition that is also modern and playful. It is very much a Lanvin collection, using their cut and tailoring, with lots of focus on form and details for both women and men. The launch in November is going to be full of wonderful surprises.” Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor at H&M.

The Lanvin collection will feature pieces for both men and women. A film featuring the collection will be available for viewing on www.hm.com November 2.
