Psyched for Stripes

stripe
The horizontal Breton stripe has been popular on the street for a few years now. I wasn’t truly in love with the idea until I saw Ewan McGregor sport a variety of striped sweaters in “Beginners”  The Breton stripe, once a uniform for the French navy in Brittany, now inhabits my wardrobe in many forms. It is an easy basic to wear, and I like the classic navy and white stripe the best. To mix it up past its “Paris and preppies” routine, I have been pairing my striped tops with other prints in the same color family, wearing them with long boho skirts, or trying to find interesting Breton variations. The recent Altuzarra collection for J.Crew has a few not-your-usual-Breton variations, and I think the Patricia Dress is a great example, just waiting to be dressed up or down w [...] Continue reading →

The Flat is Back!

flatback
After returning from a recent trip to New York City I must admit that my reluctance to wear flats has waned significantly. My tootsies were really killing me after a few days of hard walking in my most comfortable non-flat shoes, and yet super-chic city girls in their myriad flats surrounded me. Color me inspired! I cannot wait to pair some easy flats with my slim fit chinos and capris. My go-to brand, J.Crew has opened: Their website showcases their collection of flats, and I may have to pick up a pair of these perfect striped flats here:   Once it becomes warm enough to wear shorts, I will pair them with something unexpected like these snakeskin embossed Sperry Top Sider loafers:   And lastly, because I always want a bit of sparkle, these Maria Sharapova for Cole Haan flats [...] Continue reading →

“Street Style”- Meet Nikita

DSC_0461
I’d be willing to bet that the last few months you’ve been seeing my “Street Style” posts over here on MODE and wondering, “Just who exactly is this Nikita?” Well—here I am! My name is Nikita and I’m a current student working my way towards my dream career in politics. I first began blogging in February 2010, with one simple idea: to share my view of an absolutely crazy, overwhelming, and fascinating industry with the world. I wrote and wrote and wrote—only to realize that I had outgrown my first blog. I felt disconnected and thought it best to move on. (My style changed, too!) At that point, I decided that I would re-launch my blog, start anew, and continue to do what I love: talk about this insane little industry. My personal style doesn’t precisely fit into a parti [...] Continue reading →

Worn-Out Fashion Terms

woman-reading-book
Looks like we got it right with our name change! Source: nytimes.com LEAVE it to fashionistas to try on new buzzwords like they’re going out of style. Whether it was our bromance with heritage brands, or the shellacking that some collaborations took, 2010 saw no shortage of P.R.-driven catchphrases and trendy terms. As with all fads, it’s time to put some to rest. Couture: Calling something “couture” doesn’t make it hand-sewn or high class. Yet the word popped up everywhere last year, from discount Web sites to Canal Street pushcarts. It’s even uttered repeatedly on HSN and QVC to describe handbags, dresses and almost anything else. You can trust that the rayon and polyester cape selling for $49.95 was not hand-stitched by petite seamstresses in a Parisian atelier. Bespoke: A c [...] Continue reading →
