Opera San Jose – ‘La Traviata’

latraviata
A famed courtesan, glamorous, yet fragile. It is 1889 Paris and the celebrated Violetta Valéry has thrown a lavish party where she meets the young admirer Alfredo Germont. He has long loved her, and she is so taken with his sincerity that she abandons her life of luxury and retreats to the country to be with him. But when met with the disapproving eye of Alfredo’s father, Violetta regrettably agrees to end the affair and go back to Paris. A jealous Alfredo denounces her, but when he learns of her sacrifice he returns to beg her forgiveness, only to discover she has but moments to live. Verdi’s romantic tragedy La traviata is overflowing with some of the most unforgettable music in all of opera. His melodies, rich in passion and drama, made him the master of his time and this legenda [...] Continue reading →

Nauti Nails

1
I was feeling a little nauti this week. As a nod to my love for all things nautical, I decided to rock the vibe of boats, sea, and the Hamptons on my nails. Its not too hard to do, although you kind of need a steady hand—I’m not gonna lie! But the outcome is so worth it. What you’ll need: navy blue polish ( I used Essie “mezmerised”), white polish, red polish, and clear top coat polish. Tools: a paintbrush and toothpick. You could also buy one those nail polish pens, I’ve seen them at Sephora and Walgreens. That could actually be way easier than painting. 1. Start by painting each nail with a base of Navy Blue. 2. Wait until base is dry and then add two white horizontal stripes across each nail. Go slow and steady. PRO TIP! It helps it your hands are resting on something solid [...] Continue reading →

1626 Taraval St San Francisco, CA 94116 (415) 682-4578 gcubecafe.com It’s that time of year again when the fog rolls in and we all start craving all things warm and comforting. And it is agreeable that instant ramen bowls get old, very fast. Most of us are definitely looking for a healthier option that is reasonable. That’s why shabu shabu or hot pot, is my go to! It’s healthy, filling and a little fun. Lucky for us, San Francisco has numerous shabu shabu restaurants to choose from. Most of you can find one right in your very own neighborhood. I found one just down the street from my apartment that always hits the spot. G Cube Cafe off of Taraval Street and 27th Street serves up some awesome portions for just around fifteen bucks! Honestly I didn’t have very high [...] Continue reading →

Going light for Summer with VE Salon

vesalon
If you’ve been thinking about changing up your hair color as Winter ends, we have a great blog for you featuring my beautiful Mom. Both of us have had jet black hair for years, and she decided she needed a change but didn’t want to fry her hair with harsh bleaches. Shari at VE Salon- an amazing color master has been working with my Mom for a few months ensuring that there was no unnecessary processes and that she had the look she had in her head with out loosing hair to breakage. Shari used low lights, high lights, and ended the look with a Brazilian Blow out! My Mom was glowing from head to toe and I can see that she’s so happy she decided to go light after all these years. And the look on my Dad’s face didn’t hurt either, LOL! The pictures speak for thems [...] Continue reading →

Intermezzo at Quattro

intermezzo2
There’s a new addition at Four Seasons East Palo Alto. The aptly named, “Intermezzo” now occupies the space between the bar scene and full-on dinning experience at Quattro (the Four Seasons restaurant). Last Friday, MODE had the chance to celebrate the grand opening. Italian for “in between,” Intermezzo serves up a wildly diverse selection of small plates and appetizers. Diners have the choice of eating Famiglia (all at once), Festivo (as its ready) and Formale (course by course). A lot of the plates are designed to be shared—with this in mind there is a huge portion of the menu that can be prepared gluten free upon request. All menu items were created by Executive Chef Marco Fossati, Chef de Cuisine Edward Higgins and Pastry Chef Eric Keppler. I started off with a the made-f [...] Continue reading →
