It’s that time of year again when the fog rolls in and we all start craving all things warm and comforting. And it is agreeable that instant ramen bowls get old, very fast. Most of us are definitely looking for a healthier option that is reasonable. That’s why shabu shabu or hot pot, is my go to! It’s healthy, filling and a little fun. Lucky for us, San Francisco has numerous shabu shabu restaurants to choose from. Most of you can find one right in your very own neighborhood. I found one just down the street from my apartment that always hits the spot. G Cube Cafe off of Taraval Street and 27th Street serves up some awesome portions for just around fifteen bucks!
Honestly I didn’t have very high [...] Continue reading →
Intermezzo at Quattro
There’s a new addition at Four Seasons East Palo Alto. The aptly named, “Intermezzo” now occupies the space between the bar scene and full-on dinning experience at Quattro (the Four Seasons restaurant). Last Friday, MODE had the chance to celebrate the grand opening.
Italian for “in between,” Intermezzo serves up a wildly diverse selection of small plates and appetizers. Diners have the choice of eating Famiglia (all at once), Festivo (as its ready) and Formale (course by course). A lot of the plates are designed to be shared—with this in mind there is a huge portion of the menu that can be prepared gluten free upon request. All menu items were created by Executive Chef Marco Fossati, Chef de Cuisine Edward Higgins and Pastry Chef Eric Keppler.
I started off with a the made-f [...] Continue reading →
S’mores Truffles Please
I love everything s’mores, you might remember my S’mores Cupcakes recipe I shared with you last year, well here’s a new spin on it. I think of it as campfire elegance otherwise known as S’mores Truffles. So hard to resist, and so easy to make, your friends and family will be blown away by the presentation both inside and out of the truffle.
Made with Milk chocolate (you can sub Dark Chocolate if that’s your pleasure), a mini marshmallow hidden in the middle and rolled in graham cracker dust. This is a decadent recipe special enough to be shared for an event or even just on the sofa huddled underneath a wool blanket. (Hey, it’s cold out there.)
Now get in that kitchen and make some goodies! And then return to that blanket stat!

Ramen Doraku
Ramen Doraku

The seasons are changing and it’s starting to get chilly! So what sounds better than piping hot ramen on a foggy Bay day for under 10 bucks? I had a serious craving for some comfort food and found my way to a relatively new ramen joint on Taraval Street. Ramen Doraku is the place to go for some quick, satisfying Japanese ramen. It’s hard to miss the the giant red torii, or gate with dozens of wooden pallets inscribed with Japanese characters that actually reads their menu!
When we arrived, as usual I begin reading the quick tips and reviews from Yelp on my phone. From the looks of it, the place wasn’t bad at all! And the best part? I was tipped off to check-in and show it to our server for a FREE appet [...] Continue reading →
Wine, Dinner and Fashion to Benefit Stanford Women’s Health. Presented at Quattro at Four Seasons.
A stones throw from the 101, the best kept secret in bay area food and fashion are the events at The Four Seasons Hotel in East Palo Alto’s own restaurant, Quattro.
Starting with the food. The meals feature local ingredients, so fresh that the were picked or foraged while you were still swapping shoes with your evening’s outfit. For Saturday’s event, Quattro Chef Marco Fossati created a four course dinner to pair with Sommelier Claudio Villani’s picks. In this case, Sequoia Grove, Corison, and Domaine Carneros—three Napa wineries whose winemakers all happen to be very talented women, an appropriate pairing since proceeds benefited Stanford’s Women’s Health program.
My favorite thing about eating at the events at Quattro is that each meal is a unique experience. After attendin [...] Continue reading →
