We recently had the chance to check out one of the newest Restaurants to hit the Bay Area–ORYZA Bistro Asiana at Westfield Valley Fair. ORYZA is a contemporary Thai & Pan Asian Restaurante. Oryza Bistro Asiana serves delicious, beautiful, Southeast Asian cuisine in a hip, modern setting perfect for a date, a girls or guys night out, or a visit with the family.

We started off the meal with the Coconut Lemongrass Seafood Soup. On the menu it’s described as: “A light coconut soup with salmon, shrimp, fish, Yukon Gold Potatoes and onion, flavored with lemongrass, galangal and kaffir lime leaves.”

The soup was definitely light, and very refreshing. There were big pieces of fresh seafood in the soup, and the portion was huge–which we noticed was a trend as the meal move forward. The other part I particularly loved about this was that it was gluten free!

The next item we tried on the menu was the Bulgogi Spare Ribs. The menu describes it as: “St. Louis spare ribs slow cooked in Korean BBQ sauce served with mango slaw.”

From the second this dish hit the table the smell had our mouths watering. The meat was soft, and immediately melted from the first bite. The sauce was sweet yet spicy, and the mango slaw was the perfect compliment.

The third dish that we tried was the Pumpkin Shrimp Curry. The menu describes it as: “Red coconut curry, kobocha squash, string beans, bell peppers, Thai Basil.”

I am a definite curry lover and this dish was beyond amazing! The pumpkin flavor was just right, and the spice was not overwhelming. This is one of my favorite dishes and I couldn’t stop. We had it over rice, and then noticed we were adding it everything else that hit the table. When you visit ORYZA, this is one you can’t pass up!

We had to try one of the rice dishes, and we decided to go with the Pineapple Shrimp Fried Rice. Again, we were pleasantly surprised with by the size of the portion, and the size of the shrimp too! The menu describes it as: “Shrimp, egg, pineapple, cashew nuts, tomato, raisins, curry powder and onions.”

This dish was flavorful, and a great addition to the to the side dishes. The spices were not overpowering, and there was no skimping on the shrimp.  The pineapple was fresh, cooked just right, and the nuts added just the right amount of crunch to the dish.

And of course we couldn’t pass up the Pad Thai! We ordered the Pad Thai Shrimp, which the menu describes as: “Traditional recipe of rice noodles, shrimps, egg, tofu, bean sprouts, sweet pickled radish, garlic, chives, and peanuts.”

This was a WINNER! I love Pad Thai, but haven’t had much luck with any recently. But I have found my new favorite Pad Thai restaurante! I’ve often hear people say they love this dish but they can’t handle the smell. This dish didn’t have this issue at all! My husband who has to this day refused to touch Pad Thai for this reason LOVED this dish at ORYZA! It also wasn’t excessively sticky, and the noodles separated just right. If you’re a Pad Thai fan, you have to visit ORYZA!

And last but recently not least–dessert! This was a gluten free girl’s dream! More than one tasty, mouth watering, delicious dish to choose from?! Yes please! Again the portions were out of control! The coconut ice cream was out of this world! The dish was the perfect combination of warm and cold, that just came alive when you take a bite.

We started with the Pandan Ginger Creme Brulee: “Pandan-infused custard embedded with crystallizied ginger,” and as if that wasn’t enough we went for the Black Sticky Rice Sundae: “Sweet black sticky rice pudding. Young coconut ice cream, caramelized pineapple, and almond praline.”

Yes we’re starving now too. Bottom line? ORYZA brings a fresh, tasty, family friendly restaurante to the Bay Area. They also have a great bar area that’s the perfect start to a girls shopping trip, or a stop after visiting your favorite stores. We loved that the restaurante is a great space for so many different lifestyles, but affordable for  everyone! Dishes started at $4.95 and portions were generous. With main dishes starting at $10.95 this is a this is perfect spot for anyone!
