It is times like these when humans prove themselves triumphant over the forces of nature. I was fortunate enough to conduct an e-mail interview with a family that has put their hearts and souls into keeping a smile on their daughter’s face.
In particular, I spoke with Monique, who describes her thirteen-year old daughter Alyssa Davilla as “a child with a heart bigger than [she] can explain.” Alyssa, who has disabilities and numerous medical conditions including seizures, chromosomal abnormality, cerebral palsy, GERD, sleep apnea, and developmental delays, continues to brighten all the lives of the people she meets. Although she is an extremely strong girl who strives to be independent, she is still dependent on adult assistance and supervision.
Alyssa is currently undergoing therapies in order to help her with daily living skills, as well as physical and behavioral development. The major danger associated with her condition is her immediate and frequent seizures, which are often hard to catch, and are fatal and detrimental to her health.
That’s why Alyssa’s family is extremely passionate about finding a seizure service dog for Alyssa. The service dog will serve as a companion to Alyssa, will alert the family when Alyssa is having a seizure, and can even catch Alyssa if she starts to fall during an episode. The dog can be her life savior, even detecting small changes in Alyssa’s body and behavior that may signal an impending episode.
However, the seizure service dog will cost about $13,000 excluding the cost of the airfare to pick up the dog. Alyssa’s family is hoping they can garner the support of Bay Area’s compassionate and generous citizens in order to help save Alyssa’s life.
