For years the fashion world taught us to avoid black with browns [same with black and navy], but that was also when we were supposed to match our shoes and purses, and make sure our blazer and pants were the same color. But now we live in a fashion world where opposites work, and the goal is to create a look that “goes” vs. one that matches.
There are a few basic guidelines that I like to follow when I wear the two colors together but more often than not they work very well together so have fun, throw all “rules” out the window and challenge yourself to step out of the box if it’s something you’ve been avoiding.
Simple Steps to Mixing Black and Brown
-Both colors are neutrals so they will usually compliment each other very well. I like to use lighter browns, and I usually like to accessorize with gold or gold tones when I wear them together as I feel it pulls the two together really well.
- This is a great backdrop for your glitzy and bold jewelry and accessories. This is the perfect time to grab a bold handbag, sunglasses, or shoes and really give them the attention they deserve.
- If you’re still hesitant then start off simple. Find a purse that actually is black and brown, or shoes that combine both colors and wear them with a LBD or jeans and white-T.
- Mix your textures. Suede and leather really go well together, so throw on a brown suede vest with a black leather belt to mix textures and neutral colors in a really fun way.
- While black generally comes in one shade you can still find different tones by getting different fabrics. Patent leather and silk for example will give your blacks shine while suede and furs will generally mute them. With brown you get a lot more options and can have a ton of fun finding pieces if you have a wardrobe dominated by black.
