Trend Alert: Crop Tops!

Crop-Top-photos

This spring’s latest trend can be summed up in a short sentence:  It’s all about 70’s chic. When it comes to tops we’re seeing hemlines of all different lengths this season. These can be the traditional crop top or a top that is shorter in the front and longer in the back. I’ve seen crop tops in trendier stores like Urban Outfitters, Free People, and Juicy Couture as well as some of my fave online shopping sites (I can’t lie, I was pretty excited to see a “Crop Tops” category at American Apparel). This is further proof that the 70′s are back in full effect. Tees, tanks, sweaters, cardigans, vests, blazers, and jackets are all getting shortened for spring.

I know what you’re thinking , and no, this trend isn’t just for those tummy-bearing teenagers or hippies either! Anyone can wear this trend. The key is – layering! Pair a shorter top with a great long tank (my favorite is a simple long scoop tank) to avoid showing off too much skin. This is layering done just right (by Kourtney K. and Lo Bosworth):

Although, for fearless fashionistas, if you’ve got it, flaunt it! I love the way Vanessa Hudgens totally embraces the boho trend with her crop top, feather extensions, fringe bag, and jewelry she was spotted wearing at Coachella last month.

Emily Shuman of Cupcakes & Cashmere pairs her crop top with a maxi skirt pulling off two super trendy looks flawlessly:

Free People shows all of their tops without the layering piece underneath for a truly boho look. Here are a few of my top picks (although it’s hard to choose just a few when I love them all!):

A cropped jacket is on my must-have list for spring. I just got this shrunken jacket from BP. Nordstrom. BTW – I received so many compliments the first time I wore it with skinny jeans and a girly chiffon tank underneath. It can also be worn over a dress (it would look super cute with a maxi!):

This is perfect for the girl that embraces the military trend with feminine undertones. Be sure and pair your short jacket with a longer top.

For a dressier cropped jacket, go with a blazer like this one from Urban Outfitters:

The options are endless when it comes to crop tops! They can be dressy or casual when worn with the right outfit.

What do you think of the crop top trend?!

I once read “if you are old enough to have experienced a trend once, you’re probably too old to experience it again. As someone who rocked my share of crop tops in the late eighties and nineties, I’m going to pass on the crop tops this time. The fact that I’ve had five kids has absolutely nothing to do with my decision… :)

You made a valid point but personally I think you shouldn’t limit yourself on fashion for any reason. It really boils down to some can pull it off some don’t. It comes from your presentation and presence but then again not everyone can be Karl Lagerfeld. We can try =) Those who grew up on this trend should have an advantage since they experience all kinds of combination for this look. I think it would benefit some of the younger gen that a few of the 80s baby can school them correctly. It’s not trying hard if you already done did it! hehe

I like this look, but only for people who are trim and fit; midriff-baring tops on those of us who have a bit extra around the middle is simply unsightly–especially the muffin-top sported by many (if not most) of the average-bodied.

Got something to say? Go for it!
