Trend Alert: Feathers!

Anybody who’s caught an episode of this season of American Idol has probably asked themselves the question, “What the heck does Steven Tyler have in his hair?” The answer, my friends: Feather hair extensions. And Steven Tyler isn’t the only one adding feathers of every shape, size, and color into his hair. It’s not only for semi-retired rockstars, either. Other celebrities like Ke$ha, Miley Cyrus, and the Pretty Little Liars girls (my personal faves) have all been spotted rocking this look.

It’s easy to get this awesome Boho look (think hippie chic). This year it’s ALL about Coachella (an annual music festival held in Indio, CA – this year featuring artists such as Kings of Leon, Black Keys, Kanye West, Duran Duran, Wiz Khalifa and more) and anything you can do to get that look is super hot this year. They come in different shapes and sizes, so hesitant hipsters can start off more subtle. Placement is key: they can be placed different areas in your hair so the feathers show a lot, or just a little. We all know that Ke$ha is not scared of a fashion trend, in the photo above she sports a ton of large feathers. Hilary Duff and Selena Gomez demonstrate in the photos below the more popular way to wear them with just a couple thin strands.

For a slightly more dramatic look (without looking like Steven Tyler), ask your stylist to put some brighter colors close to wear your part your hair (instead of underneath). Jennifer Love Hewitt wears this look perfectly:

I went for a more subtle look and did several darker strands that blended with my hair color, and one purple strand:

Many salons offer this trendy service now and most use good quality feathers that can be washed and that you can also straighten or curl (so they always go with your current hairstyle). They last about 8-10 weeks, so you can wear them to all of your summer concerts. I got mine done by Shane at Gina Khan Salon in Walnut Creek. The feathers are held in your hair with a small microlink that kind of looks like a little plastic bead. The whole process took about 10 minutes and cost me $25 for 3 strands.

Note: If you’re skeptical about getting feathers clipped into your hair in your hair, opt for a cool pair of feather earrings instead.
