I love speaking with people about makeup brushes. The conversations are always littered with a profound variety of opinions and habits. This week, I will share with you the most common cosmetic brushes in the market place; Their style and best use.

Foundation: This brush provides a flawless finish and an easy application of your emollient foundation. It is cut and contoured for perfect blending, especially around your nose and jawline, and produces a smooth, even finish. This narrow brush is not fluffed; the tightness of the bristles produces a streak-free application.

Face Concealer: Specifically designed to blend and feather face concealer into foundation so that flaws are concealed and beautiful skin is revealed. Your concealer brush should be fairly firm and narrow without fluff. Similar in size to an all over shadow brush. For better blending, apply your concealer after you apply your foundation.

Blush brush: Dome-shaped with bristles cut on a gradation, your blush brush will pick up and deposit a natural amount of color to the cheek area. Very little blending is required with this gently fluffed brush.

Large powder brush: An extra large and generally dense brush that is chiseled for blending of powder products. The fluffiness of this design grabs a natural amount of product for light to buildable coverage.

Buffing: Widely known as a kabuki brush, this buffing brush features a short flat head and short stem which ensures an easy, even application of loose and pressed powders. The result is a professional air-brushed look.

Bronzing: Look for a brush-head with two lengths of bristles: longer bristles to pick up the ideal amount of bronzer while shorter bristles buff in color for an even glow. The dense brush base allows you to expertly blend for a guaranteed, natural finish.

All over shadow: This brush is usually the one that comes in the shadow compact. It features a tapered head and gradated bristles. With a natural grab of product, shadow is applied and effortlessly blended perfection.

All over blending: Generally oval in shape, it is the perfect finishing brush for the eye area. Shadows are blended instantly, eliminating harsh lines.

Precision crease / short shader: This amazing brush defines the crease area by creating the perfect contour through dense shading and smudging.

Precision eyeliner: A well-defined, precise line is achieved using this small tapered brush with an extra fine point. Works equally well with gel/cake liners or powdered shadows which can be used wet.

Flat eyeliner: With short, stiff bristles that make applying eyeliner to the lash line quick and easy with rich definition. This flat brush covers more area at a time and is great at smudging and defining.

Eyebrow: Commonly known for it’s stiff-angled bristle design, it provides maximum control for creating and defining eyebrows. Can also be used to apply eyeliner.

Lash: With a mascara-style wand this brush is excellent for not only applying mascara but also separating the lashes and grooming brows. I use mine to clean shadow fallout off of my lashes before I apply my mascara.

Lip: With a flat tapered tip, this brush applies your lipsticks with precision and is excellent as a blending brush for creating custom shades. This tool comes in very handy to access that ‘last bit’ of product; most lipstick tubes contain an additional 1/4” that you can access with a brush. Comes in handy when your favorite hits the discontinued list.
