You know how they say every fashion trend is bound to repeat itself? Well, this spring that saying is definitely true. The 70’s are back with a vengeance and the Bohemian trend is huge again! With that we are seeing flare, trouser, and wide leg jeans from every denim designer. From Citizens, William Rast, and Habitual Denim, to more moderately priced brands like H&M and Vigoss, the Boho look is the hottest trend (again!) for spring and summer. Although bootcut, flares, wide legs, and trouser jeans all flare out below the knee, each style is slightly different. The bootcut has the slightest flare below the knee. Flares can vary from a slight flare to a super flare. Wide legs are cut wider through the hip and thigh and even wider below the knee. Trousers are cut slightly slimmer than a wide leg cut but always feature the thick hem at the bottom. Here are my tips for how to rock this look, even on a budget:
1) Flares/trouser leg/wide leg work best worn with heels. This is the line where you go from hippie to trendy. Heels take the look from the 1970′s and give it some 2011 class. Worn with wedges or espadrilles that are HOT this season, they pair perfectly with the Bohemian trend.
Steve Madden, Jessica Simpson, Michael Kors, and Sam Edelman all have super cute wedges this season. If you are tall, make sure the bottom of your jeans goes at least to the middle of the heel of your shoe. Flares can be worn with flats, however make sure your jeans are hemmed to the appropriate length to be worn with flats. Flares should not be worn cuffed.
2) Flares can be a very difficult fit, especially for more of a petite girl, like myself. Shorter girls should opt for a petite cut, like the “Dita” Bootcut Petite fit jean by Citizens of Humanity which has a shorter leg break than longer length jeans. This solves the problem of jeans being baggy in the knees (I always have this problem with designer denim which seems like it’s made for girls who are 5’10” or above). The “Dita” jean solves this problem, and so much more. Note: These jeans are an investment, but worth it.
3) These styles can also be paired with a shorter top, or you can tuck your top into the jeans. Add a belt through your belt loops to finish off this look. Belts are a great way to polish off a look that you’re worried may look too hippie. Be careful not to pair with a top that’s too loose or too boxy so you don’t look unbalanced.
4) If you’re nervous to make the investment in a trend you’re unsure of, these are my recommendations for reasonably-priced options for the budget-savvy gal:
a. H&M has denim styles priced under $30.
b. BP. at Nordstrom has bootcuts, flares, and trouser leg jeans moderately priced from $36-$68.
c. The Gap has some great bootcut styles priced between $59.50-$69.50.
d. Macy’s has flares by GUESS?, Jessica Simpson, and Silver, most for under $100.
Be forewarned: This trend is NOT for everyone so don’t throw away your skinny jeans just yet! Skinny jeans will continue to be a HUGE trend this year. If you’re too scared to try some flares (or pull some of your old pairs out of storage), all of this season’s cute Boho tops can still be worn with your faithful skinnies or a great pair of shorts. But don’t be afraid to try this trend! You may need to try on many different pairs before you find a flattering cut! Start out with a pair of bootcut jeans to ease into the trend before going with the super flares or wide legs.
