Sacramento Fashion Week

“Sometimes it’s more about quality than quantity, and the if the Emerging Showcase was any indication, Sacramento is off to an ambitious start. The event took place in the historic Elks Tower ballroom, and the runway with its twin projection screens, looked grand. The event was well produced, ran smoothly, and I was touched by the warmth of the folks that organized the show. The woman who graciously escorted us to our seats, greeted me with such a genuine welcome. I was pleasantly surprised to see that we were seated in the second row which gave me an excellent view of the clothes on the runway.”

“Toele’s line was all black and white, a bold move for such a novice designer. Cocktail dresses and men’s jeans were anchors for Toele’s line. The collection finale was a gorgeous ruffled evening dress. Toele said he was pleased with the response to his collection and he really put his whole heart into his pieces.

Vie’s line was playful, fun and yet professional. She called her collection, “Pink Tuxedo,” drawing from classic tuxedo wear and incorporating ruffles, bows and everything feminine. Her line felt so cohesive and while over the top, some of the pieces were very wearable. The models glided down the runway dolled up like Harajuku girls; the hair and make-up really completed the designers bubblegum-sweet aesthetic.”

“I asked Dave about a final thought and he said, “I always wanted to give back to the community and my goal is to always tie everything I do to a charity. That’s my way of giving back to the community. Teaming up with a local charity is actually one of my main goals. It makes it easier for me to do what I love to do and also give back to the community at the same time.”

“Maria Serquen, a student at Sacramento State and also Intern Coordinator and Stage Manager for Fashion Week attended the Launch Party and I asked her a couple of questions as well.

When asked how she became involved she said, “I got involved in this process through a fashion show that happened at the capitol last year. I met Mykha there and he brought me on as an intern coordinator and then I started basically helping him out. I started helping him here and there and basically now I’m doing backstage planning. My participation evolved from friendship and because I was very determined in what I did. For last year’s Eco-Fashion Show I was the coordinator for that and it was an event that took place through the Jewish Heritage Federation at the capitol.”

I’ve placed the photos from the two shows in the albums below. But one designer in particular caught my eye with his designs. There is something refined, rich, and clean about his designs and that draws me in. I would love to see what he could do with a big budget and access to ridiculously expensive fabrics.

The red and blue stripe short jumper (don’t know what to call it) is adorable and if I had the body for it and it were a tad bit longer, I would wear that!! I also really liked the taupe silk dress and the wide-leg trousers at the top. This looked like a great time! [VF]
