There’s been a trend slowly gaining momentum this year, and you’ve probably noticed it already. But you may have mistaken the wearer for an overzealous Christmas tree decorator. I’m talking Hair Tinsel, of course.
Once this style was on my trend radar (should we call this Trendar, people? Show of hands?), I couldn’t stop seeing it. From a 4-year-old in Palo Alto to a 20-something waitress at a San Jose Thai restaurant… what was going on?
Basically, Tinsel hair, Hair Bling, Pop Tinsel, the names go on and on, is now everywhere. It appears to have all started in February with Beyonce at this year’s Grammy Awards Show. The trend then jumped to the Real Housewives, and then became a popular Back-to-School choice amongst kids. With the holidays upon us, there’s no stopping Tinsel hair, kids, adults, and even horses from getting the shiny extension treatment. (For you techies, according to Google Trends, search volume for “Hair Tinsel” spiked in Late November to it’s highest levels since Google began keeping data in 2004*)
It appears we have a full blown holiday fad on our hands folks. If you want to join in, Salons will tie a few strands into your hair or you can DIY by buying them and watching a YouTube how-to video, such as How-to-Hair-Flair. (Before shopping for hair tinsel, be sure to call ahead or look online. In my experience, hair tinsel is still hit or miss with retailers). Expect the tinsel to last two weeks to a month. You can flat iron, curl, wash and dry—whatever—treat them like extensions. These bling strings are available in large variety of colors to complement any hair color.
Personally, I’m on the fence. Tinsel hair is adorable with kids, but borderline animal abuse with horses. As for those of us in the should-know-better age division? Well… if you find yourself in the holiday spirit, go for it—heck with enough confidence you can pull off anything. But, please, leave the Kix strings on the tree.
