The Counter

Who knew there was a good burger place in San Jose where you can get grass fed free range beef at a trendy upscale joint? Apparently everyone else in San Jose, because The Counter is always packed!

The format is simple. You pick your burger type, toppings and bun and hand in your order. You wait. They bring it out. You eat it. You throw your right foot in and shake it all about, because this burger does the hokey pokey in your mouth!

We ordered the sweet potato fries and they were the best I’ve had in a long time. This tricky treat was perfectly fried–not too crispy and not too mushy, with just enough salt. They have a decent draft beer selection (they could use some Sam Adams on tap – personal preference) and the burgers are out of this world good!!

I got a 1/3 pound of beef with grilled onions (from heaven), sprouts, imported Swiss (soooo flavorful), sauteed mushrooms (I ate some with a fork because they were just that good) and some ranch on the side. Let me tell you about these onions from heaven, they were caramelized with a great balance of texture an flavor. It’s possible to have onions like this lose their structure if they are cooked in too much liquid, or if too little, they can burn. These onions were sweet, and just that perfect in between that marks an excellently caramelized onion. I about yelled out at them that it was totally making up for the bad burger times I’d had the day before. I didn’t, but I really wanted to.

I’m a big burger lover so this place was right up my ally! They have amazing milk shakes too. And someday when I’m really skinny, I’ll celebrate by going there. Until that day comes, I’ll recommend them to other people. If you’re looking for a family friendly, fun, quality place to have some good old fashioned American food – The Counter will be your new favorite place, because it’s mine!
