Ever wonder how the pros create waves and curls with a flat iron? I tried it before, after seeing it done on TV and reading the how-tos in magazines. The result? I’m still untagging photos of that disaster. I just didn’t get it. Being a visual learner, when my friend introduced me to this YouTube video “How to get WAVY hair with a flat iron,” I was amazed. Julie (JulieG713), the YouTube hairstylist, did it so effortlessly and the resulting waves were amazing!
I had to try. I don’t own the “Style Rush,” but I found using my own Biosilk flat iron works just as well. In the video, Julie says to start off with a Chi heat protectant and volumizing spray. I used the Chi Silk serum and Orlando Pita/ T3 Elevate Volumizing spray for flat iron, which worked great for me. The T3 Elevate product is especially effective before you flat iron, and gives my straight hair some much needed bounce. Another thing she uses is Wonder Waves from Garnier Fructise. Once again I improvised with my Paul Mitchell spray wax for texture and a flexible hold that loosened the waves up for the natural look I was going for.
Back to the video. If you’ve had difficulty mastering your flat iron in the past, Julie is the teacher you’ve been looking for. You will end up with long lasting waves—I’ve even had mine survive a nap. Although Julie’s waves are a bit messy by the end of her tutorial, I expect this was a result of talking and flat ironing at the same time. Expect your own results to continue to improve as you play around and create your own look. Julie is right; this technique gives a lot of volume! I’m now officially a flat iron addict.
Check out some of her other videos on hair styles. Most are very easy! Be sure to save your cash by experimenting with whatever product you have on hand. I’m a big fan of the “Naughty girl curls, curling your hair with a flat iron” video. It’s a bit of a different technique and you end up with voluptuous curls.

Well that was cool! I don’t know why I never thought of watching a “how to” video for my straight iron. My hair is so crazy since I’ve had kids, it is mostly wavy, but frizzy, so maybe this will be a way for me to make it a nice wave. I also realized I really don’t use any product in my hair (except for the chi oil) and perhaps it would look better if I used something. [fb]
I know, I was just going to give up on the idea of doing anything else with a flat iron besides flat ironing until I saw this video! And I def. think using some products that will work with your hair type will improve the overall look.
Thanks Franci for sharing.

So I totally tried this Monday. It looked FANTASTIC! I still don’t have product and I think it would have lasted a lot longer if I had, but it looked great and I felt great that my hair was “done”. Thanks so much…I’m passing this along to my other mommy friends who struggle with the same issue.
I’m so glad it worked for you! Me and a bunch of my friends have been doing this as well. It’s a quick and easy hairstyle and it looks effortless! Thanks for the update.
