Finding the Perfect Red Lipstick

In antiquity, the color red was supposedly the first color perceived by man. It was thought to fight off evil. In the 18th century, it was a popular color to wear as a wedding gown. Currently, in some cultures, it is still popular for a bride to wear a red veil to symbolize love and fertility.

An even more powerful statement is when a woman chooses to adorn red lips. The combination of a woman and red lipstick has been sexy, sensual and irresistible throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Since sexy women come in all colors and skin tones, it’s very important to find and choose a red lipstick that best suits the tone of one’s skin. It is equality important to know how to apply the rest of the makeup if your lips are red.

Finding a red lipstick can be a hard task. Red is a strong color and it is important to choose a shade that works with your natural coloring and doesn’t overpower it.

If you are a woman with warmer skin tones, which means you have golden skin and your hair has a golden or reddish tone, a wine, red, or a burgundy color would be best. A recommendation would by Korres lipstick number 58, Wine-Red.

Women with a cooler skin tone, which is rosy or olive skin, light eyes and darker hair, should try a scarlet-blue red. This does not mean blue lipstick. This means a red lipstick with a blue undertone, like the Bare Escentuals Classic Red Lipstick.

Paler skin toned women should also go with a wine-red color. A very bold red could wash you out. A good coral-red or orange-red would suit you best. MAC has a great coral-red color lipstick called Tango.

If you have dark hair and olive skin, or even dark skin, you can get away with those fire reds. These reds can sometimes be the most fun. Some that I personally have tried and loved are MAC’s Russian Red and MAC Red, as well as NARS Jungle Red.

If it’s a red lip type of day or night and you are not sure what to apply to your cheeks and eyes, the best thing is to keep it simple. Black eyeliner, mascara, and a neutral or plum cheek match well with red lips. Red lips are bold and having a dramatic eye or cheek may be overpowering. If this is an evening affair, a smokey eye complements red lips very well, if the right colors are used. Stick with blacks and browns if you choose a smokey eye.

If red lips are not your cup of tea, but you are still wanting to try something new on your lips this fall, try a nude or deep pink, raspberry color. Your lips will thank you.

How did I miss this article?! I’ve asked in the past about my red lipstick. I have been thinking that it is too bright red (though I LOVE the color of red it is), and feel kind of like a hooker when I wear it. I just can’t bring myself to wear it anymore. It is an YSL, but now reading this article, I understand why. THANKS! [TF]
