Designer Interview: Naida Begeta of Kao Pao Shu

02.jpg_550

Naida Begeta, the brains behind Kao Pao Shu, has been designing since she graduated top of her class in Sarajevo. With an original style and a strong following around the world, it is no surprise Kao Pao Shu is becoming a known name in the fashion world. Naida has taken fashion beyond just designs and fabrics, and made each piece into a handcrafted work of art. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Naida and ask her about her unique and expanding brand, Kao Pao Shu.

F: What inspired you to start designing?
N: I studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Sarajevo. The first thing that I designed was a bag that I had made. I couldn’t find a bag that I liked, but I found a material that I did. From that, I realized that I could create things from the ideas that I had.

F: What made you establish Kao Pao Shu as a brand?
N: I was intrigued by my first piece, and continued playing with materials. I studied and researched fabrics and materials, and began creating forms from learning how various materials work and behave.

F: What is unique about Kao Pao Shu?

N: What makes Kao Pao Shu unique is the strict lines. Each piece is handmade and virtually one of a kind. Few quantities of each item are produced.

F: Can you describe the Fall 2010 Collection?
N: Kao Pao Shu does not follow trends or design for the seasons. Yet, the pieces are always new and different. This collection uses wider ribbons and colorful patterns.

F: Where did the name “Kao Pao Shu” originate from?
N: Kao Pao Shu was an actress in Kung Fu films in the 1950s. By chance, I heard the name and I really liked it. After I researched her, I was happy with my choice for the name.

F: Who is the Kao Pao Shu woman?
N: The Kao Pao Shu woman has a strong personality and a free mind.

F: What is in the future for Kao Pao Shu?
N: I want to keep moving the brand forward and expanding into more markets. Currently, the brand is doing well in the Japanese market. We are working to grow the brand in the European and American markets as well. As Kao Pao Shu develops, we are working on new projects such as drawing on canvas and ribbon paintings. We are excited about where the brand is going.

I love her Red Ribbon Pocket Bag! I like a little bigger bag and that not only looks incredible, but looks the size I like to carry. How cute too are the multi-colored satin bows?! As soon as my daughter has hair…

I can't see myself pulling off many of the dresses, except perhaps the black pinstripe bubble skirt. Altogether they remnind me of my college days in Berkeley which even then I was too conservative for. :) I love the look and idea of the grey ribbon dress, but personally would prefer a more traditional hem at the bottom. Gorgeous designs though and they look impecably constructed.
