Bay Area Gives Back-Pillowcases

LDFA

A few weeks ago, I saw pictures of beautiful girls in these adorable little dresses and it really caught my eye. Curious, I wanted to know what these photos were from. I was surprised to learn that right here in the Bay Area, there is a great group of women who are taking something as simple as pillow cases, their time, and their talent, to help girls around the world.

Now we may not all have the ability to create schools for girls like Oprah, but this is something that we can all do! This is the first time I’m coming to each of our readers and asking that we give together! I cannot tell you how many inspirational emails I get from readers and what stories have been shared with me. My heart and vision is that we, as a community, get on the map and be known for doing amazing things for others, and help those who aren’t privileged to live the lives that we do.

Here is a very touching letter I received from one of our readers:

“My husband finds it interesting that I can watch shows about murder or any other number of criminal behaviors (fiction and non), but as soon as a child is involved as the victim of abuse of any sort, I can’t stop weeping. Perhaps it is a connection I have with those children because of my early childhood filled with terrible abuse. No matter the reason, I am connected and my heart pours out for the innocent, the needy, and children in particular.

Impoverished children all over the world suffer unthinkable acts of cruelty. Girls especially fall prey to predators because they are seen as weak and less valuable than their male peers or even animals. When these girls appear to be taken care of, they are far less likely to be abused and taken advantage of. A single new dress can change that for a girl and literally alter the course of her life. A pillowcase dress is a perfect way to meet the needs of these girls because they are simple to make, inexpensive, easy to ship, and fit a variety of sizes. Being part of the construction process puts us each that much closer to the life-changing experience of the girls receiving these dresses, and that in turn will propel us toward taking greater actions to end the atrocities that humans commit against their most vulnerable.

I do this because of them…because I can. All we are asked to do in life is what we can. Nothing more, but nothing less.

Thank you for taking an interest in this.”

We just had our first night of sewing these dresses last Thursday and it was emotional for all eleven of us there. The impact these dresses have on the girls' lives who receive them is nearly incomprehensible to those of us who have lived in the United States our whole lives and perhaps never experienced this kind of abuse. Something so simple can do so much and we know that anyone who gets involved in whatever way they decide, it will impact them as well. Thank you in advance!

We are making these dresses also. We have a bulletin board up at work about them and the ladies are either making the dresses or bringing in pillowcases for those of us that sew. We are doing this thru the month of August and then will send them off.

So great!! Keep it up…we'll never run out of girls who need them! I've always wanted to help foster kids here in the US and someone mentioned that we could use these as pajamas for girls coming into shelters. I have a feeling my sewing machine will never see an end to pillowcases!
