DJ Tina T – Fashionista. Famed DJ. Camp Counselor?

DJ Tina T is currently living out her dreams with a career that has blown up beyond her wildest expectations, and an amazing project called, “Camp Spin-Off” a youth camp that she created! Her heart and passion for music and children are in every detail of this amazing project. With all that’s going on she still finds time to look amazing, and stands out from the crowd! I was really drawn to DJ Tina T’s personal style, and especially her hair! It was a treat to get some of her time and hear her thoughts on  fashion, music, Camp Spin-Off, and what really matters, Christina or Lady Gaga?

Fashionista: Congratulations on being Voted, Las Vegas’ Best Female DJ! How did you find out you had won, and what were the first thoughts that went through your mind?

DJ Tina T: I found out about the whole thing when a good friend DJ Scotty Boy told me he voted for me. I was really confused as to what he was talking about until he sent me the link to the ballot. It means a lot to me because I moved to Vegas to accomplish a specific goal I had set for myself, which was to break into the Vegas club scene. Being voted “Best Female DJ” is something I would have never even thought of achieving. It’s great to be recognized! I feel like my hard work has paid off.

F: What are your plans for this Summer? Where can your fans see you at, and what projects are you working on?

TT:  My main focus for this summer is launching the DJ Camp that I’ll tell you more about later. I have a busy tour schedule that will be taking me across the country. The best ways to keep up are by following me on twitter (www.twitter.com/djtinat), becoming a fan on facebook (www.facebook.com/djtinat) or checking my web site for all upcoming events (www.djtinat.tv).

F: I know what “Camp Spin-Off” is on paper, but what does it mean to you personally? And how can people help or support this project?

TT: Camp Spin Off is how I plan to take my DJ career to the next level and that is by giving back to the DJ community. I want to be able to step back at some point and support the next generation of DJ’s. This is just the start, but i look forword to creating a positive place where DJ’s can come together and share the same passion and have a unique, positive experience!

People can support Camp Spin Off by spreading the word to anyone that is 12-17 yrs old or has kids this age and are interested in learning how to DJ at a sleep away summer camp! The web site is: www.campspinoff.com. Of course, Camp Spin Off would not be possible without our amazing sponsors, Best Buy, DJ Hero, Skull Candy and the DJ Scratch Academy.

F: Who inspires you professionally?

TT: DJ AM and DJ Vice inspire me because they are not only amazing DJ’s, but also very  humble, motivating, inspiring, positive and down to earth people.

F: What advice would you give to your 12 year self if you could go back?

TT: Don’t talk to boys. Don’t stretch your ear lobes out. Don’t get your eye brow & belly button pierced because you will end up taking them out and have a scar. I would also make myself practice scratching records on my left side.

F: What fashion icons did you have growing up and have they changed as you’ve grown up?

TT: I used to try and dress like TLC in the 90′s. A lot of cross color. I also had stages of grunge rock growing up in Seattle, being a big fan of Nirvana. Later I fell in love with Gwen Stefanie’s style.

F: At what age did you develop your personal style?

TT: I am a late bloomer. It wasn’t until I moved to LA and started working at BPM magazine (lifestyle, fashion & music) that I became aware of fashion trends. I kind of had to step up my game to fit in around the office. My boss would be the first to call me out and make jokes if I would have come to work in something that didn’t look right. I was about 24 at the time.

F: How did the decision to take the length off your hair come to be, and was it a gradual process or did you take it all off at once?

TT: I always had short hair growing up because unfortunately my mom insisted on cutting our entire family’s hair. I grew it long for about 2 years when i graduated college and then gradually went short again, which is more my style.

During a trip to Singapore, I saw a lot of girls that were shaving under their hair. They could wear it down  at school during the day and then pull it up and show off the funky shaved designs when they went out at night. Genius!

F: Do you have a photo that you look back on and wonder, WHY did I wear that?

TT: I have some really cheesy shots from a photo shoot gone bad. I hate everything about, my hair, my outfit… the whole shoot was very glamor shots/Yuen Lui and so not my style. I learned that no one can tell you your style or force it on you. It has to come naturally and feel right.

F: What beauty product do you never leave the house without?

TT: Lipstick. I make up for the lack of makeup I wear with a bold lipstick.

F: Is there a designer that you are crazy about?

TT: I’m not big on designer stuff. I like the styles of more casual brands like Fox, Diesel, Ackrylick, DC, Etnies, Free People, American Eagle, WESC, Stussy, Volcom and Victoria Secret Pink.

Just for fun…

Favorite denim brand?
TT: Diesel & Kasil

Black or white?
TT: Black

Flats or heels?
TT: Heels, because most of the time the turntable height at clubs can be pretty high and I’m quite short. I try to spend as much time as possible in my Reebok Easy Tones to keep my legs and butt in shape.

Short or long (dresses)?
TT: Short but not too short. Nothing worse than trying to cover my ass all night.

Jeans or shorts?
TT: I live in skinny jeans.

Lipgloss or lipstick?
TT: Both

Lady Gaga or Christina?

TT: Glad you saved the easiest question for last: GAGA!
